Carbon Reduction Plan

Commitment to Achieving Net Zero

KiActiv® is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2045.

KiActiv® recognises digital healthcare can have a positive and negative environmental impact. For example, it can reduce patient travel whilst increasing energy consumption. Therefore, we welcome the environmental benefits of our work whilst remaining committed to taking actions to decrease the negative environmental impact of our work.

Baseline Emissions Calculation

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2024

Background: This section provides a detailed breakdown of KiActiv®’s Scope 2 and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions for the baseline year, calculated in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and UK Government conversion factors. As a digital health company delivering a virtual supported self-care service, KiActiv® operates with a low physical footprint and minimal direct emissions. Our primary sources of carbon relate to the manufacturing and distribution of wearable devices, with smaller contributions from our in-person office energy use, digital infrastructure, and business travel. Emissions have been estimated using activity data and industry benchmarks, with assumptions clearly stated, and updated to reflect our current operational model.

Emissions Reduction Target

In order to continue our progress toward achieving Net Zero goals, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets. We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 16.0 tCO2e by 2030. This is a reduction of 25%.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Our Carbon emissions come from two activities, internal processes and external product use, and therefore our carbon reduction projects aim to address these. The largest contributor by far is the manufacturing, shipping and distribution of KiActiv® hardware (wearable physical activity monitors), which are a key element for data collection within our service.

Environmental Policy

Improved processes that reduce our carbon footprint are more impactful than carbon offsetting. Therefore, we have created an environmental policy that informs our processes such as travel decisions, manufacturing and distribution.

Positive Impacts on End-User Carbon Footprints

In addition to reducing our own organisational emissions, our service delivers wider carbon savings by transforming how healthcare is accessed and experienced. By supporting patients remotely through a personalised technology platform, we help eliminate the frequent trips to GP surgeries, hospitals, or community venues, both in the context of attending physical alternatives, and through reducing the number of unnecessary visits to the GP and emergency trips to hospital due to the effectiveness of our digital service.

Our programme has also been shown to reduce reliance on prescription medication and improve individuals’ confidence and capacity to engage in active travel, such as walking or cycling, instead of motorised transport. Through this systemic shift from clinic-based care to digitally supported self-management, we will continue to contribute meaningfully to the decarbonisation of healthcare delivery at the population level.

Carbon Offsetting

After processes have been improved a carbon impact will remain from unavoidable areas such as logistics or capital equipment (i.e., the electricity required to power laptops). We will offset these residual emissions via certified high-quality carbon removal schemes.

Declaration and Sign-Off

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with PPN 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting. Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard. This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
